A warm welcome to 1 International Conference of Physiotherapy & Sports Sciences in the first week of October, 2007. The conference is being organized by Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala in collaboration with EFHA (Exercise Fitness and Health Alliance) and PBIAP (Punjab Branch of Indian Association of Physiotherapists). The theme for conference “Enhancing Health Through Movement: New Horizons” is seen as interdisciplinary approach bringing physical therapists, exercise scientists, and researchers on a common platform so as to discuss the forthcoming changes and challenges in the way of enhancing health at global level. The venue for conference is Guru Teg Bahadur Hall, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India.About Patiala: The Princely City of Patiala was found by Baba Ala Sigh with the construction of Patiala Fort known as “Qila Mubarak” in the year 1763. The subsequent Maharajas built most of the gardens and buildings with typical architectural designs, which today are hallmark of this heritage city. It is the capital of erstwhile Princely Patiala State and is also known as the City of Gardens in Punjab. It has been a center for educational and cultural activities right from the time of Maharajas. The premier institute of northern region Mohindra College of Patiala established in 1870 was the only degree college between Delhi and Lahore that was affiliated to Calcutta University. Presently the famous educational centers at Patiala are Punjabi University, Central Research Institute (Ayurveda), Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose National Institute of Sports, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Govt. Medical & Dental College(s), Ayurvedic College, College of Physical Education, State College of Education, Govt. Bikram College of Commerce and Govt. Mohindra College. Patiala is located in south eastern Punjab and lies between 29°49´ north latitude, 75°58´ & 76°54´ east longitude. Patiala is about 250 km from New Delhi, 50 km from Ambala Cantonment and 70 km from Chandigarh. The Punjabi University campus is situated on the Patiala-Rajpura Road, 7 km from Patiala City. This is the second University in the world to be named after a language, the first being Hebrew University of Israel. It has evolved into a multi-faceted, multi-faculty educational institution with over fifty five teaching and research departments covering disciplines in Humanities and in Sciences as diverse as Fine Arts and Space Physics. The campus is spread over about 316 acres with imposing buildings in lush green, pollution- free environment away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Most of the departments have been able to mobilize additional research funding from UGC, DST, CSIR, Planning Commission, Government Departments and other official funding agencies. The University has established its own publication bureau which is actively engaged in publishing research work of the academic community. More than 2000 titles have already been published.The Punjabi University takes pride in the achievement of Five Star status awarded by the NAAC, an autonomous body of the UGC after a thorough evaluation of various research projects undertaken and in the pipeline. The NAAC team had also an exhaustive interface with the faculty of various teaching Departments. S. About Exercise Fitness & Health Alliance (EFHA) EFHA was formed by the Exercise Scientists in 2004. It aims at a cohesive forum for the health professionals. It promotes the growth and application of the highest quality research and professional application of exercise science in health promotion, disease prevention, rehabilitation, sport fitness and training. Development and implementation of public policies and procedures concerned with exercise fitness and health is promoted. There has been intent to promote healthy lifestyle in the people and update the knowledge of health fitness experts by providing ongoing peer review and quality assurance programs via the academic programs related to exercise, fitness and health. EFHA grooms the skill by working under the guidance of specialists in a structured short-term training course. The short term programs organized by EFHA from time to time provide thorough insight into the theoretical and practical aspects of health fitness management. It brings out News Letters every year in January that contains information related to exercise physiology and health fitness, forthcoming scientific events, worldwide job vacancies. Members of the organization are highlighted through their work. National and international research papers and other developments are brought to light by publishing an internationally referred journal of Exercise Science and Physiotherapy on annual basis. Four issues have been already published. The first issue was brought in 2005. About Punjab Branch of Indian Association of Physiotherapists (PBIAP)PBIAP is the state branch of Indian Association of Physiotherapists - the representative body of Indian physiotherapists affiliated with the World Confederation of Physical Therapy. The IAP aims at setting and securing the ethical practice and upholding high professional standard of Physiotherapy along with promoting scientific research and dissemination of knowledge by organising seminars, conferences, work shops, lectures, and publications of journals etc. There are more than 15000 members of IAP and about 36 branches exist across the country. The Punjab branch of IAP was established in the year of 1999 with the aim of furthering the objectives of IAP in the state of Punjab. Ever since its inception the branch is striving hard to strengthen the Physiotherapy practice and education in the state of Punjab as per the ethics and guidelines prescribed by the parent body. It also envisaged bringing together of various Physiotherapy institutions for concomitant growth in clinical as well as academic sectors of Physiotherapy. The branch organizes workshops, clinical seminars conferences for facilitating inter and intra professional exchange of ideas. About Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala The Department of Physiotherapy & Sports Sciences came into th existence on 29 September 1989 with a course of M.Sc Sports Sciences. Now there are two courses run in the department i.e. Bachelor in Physiotherapy (4 &1/2 years) & M.Sc Sports Sciences (2 years). Today the Department of Physiotherapy & Sports Sciences at Punjabi University, Patiala is imparting high quality Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences education in the country. A special faculty that is clinically and academically strong teaches the curriculum leading to Bachelor of Physiotherapy & Master of Sports Sciences. The mission of the department is to enable the Physiotherapy students to impart the highest level of professional care to the community. From the humble beginning of just three rooms in 1989, the Department today has two laboratories of basic medical sciences and nine laboratories of clinical sciences, six lecture halls, seminar room and a well equipped library. The department has a very high profile in research activities, the main area of research being Sports Sciences, Exercise Physiology, Biochemistry of Exercise, Nutrition and Physiotherapy. The department has already produced more than 40 Ph.Ds and presently more than 20 are registered for PhD. The department organizes a number of seminars and conferences from time to time. |
